Why your website isn't showing up on Google

Your website is not showing up on Google? Here are the six most common reasons, from indexing to speed, and exactly how to fix each one.

You built a website, but when you search for your business, it is nowhere to be found. This is one of the most common frustrations for small businesses, and it almost always comes down to a handful of fixable reasons.

First, is your site even in Google?

Type site:yourbusiness.com into Google (using your real address). If some pages appear, Google knows your site exists and the problem is ranking, not discovery. If nothing appears, Google has not indexed you yet, and that is the first thing to fix.

1. Google cannot find or read your pages

Search engines rely on a sitemap and a robots file. If these are missing, Google can miss pages entirely. Submitting your site in Google Search Console, which is free, is the single most effective step. Our free website check flags whether your sitemap and robots file are in place.

2. Your pages do not say what they are about

Every page needs a clear title and description. These are what Google shows in the results. Many sites leave them blank or generic, so Google ranks them below competitors who were specific. "Plumber in Fremantle" will always beat "Home".

3. There is not enough content to rank

Google ranks pages that clearly answer what people search for. A one-page site with a logo and a phone number has very little to work with. Pages describing each service, your area and common questions give Google something to match.

4. You are missing a Google Business Profile

For local businesses, a free Google Business Profile is often more important than the website itself. It puts you on the map and in the local results with your hours, phone number and reviews.

5. Your site is slow or not mobile friendly

Google ranks slow sites and sites that do not work on phones lower, because most searches happen on a phone. You can see your mobile speed score in our free check.

6. It simply takes time

A brand-new page is not indexed instantly. After you submit it, it can take a few days to a few weeks to appear, and longer to climb the rankings.

Common questions

How long does it take to show up on Google?

Once Google knows about your page, it can take a few days to a few weeks to appear, and longer to rank well for competitive searches.

Do I need to pay Google to show up?

No. Appearing in the normal (organic) results is free. You can pay for ads to appear at the top immediately, but a well-built, relevant site earns free listings over time.

Why does my competitor rank above me?

Usually because their pages are more specific, their site is faster, they have a complete Google Business Profile, and they have been established longer.
